[auto repair] TPMS relearn after tire rotation — how do you bill it?

Sofia L.PhoneDoc Miami2 answers

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out the best way to bill for TPMS relearn services after a tire rotation. I usually do a lot of tire changes, but I'm not sure how to price the relearn part of the service. Some customers expect it to be included, while others seem surprised when I mention an extra fee. I typically charge around $20 for the TPMS relearn, but I’ve had customers push back on that because they think it should be part of the tire rotation. What strategies do you all use to communicate this charge? Any thoughts on how to streamline the process with software could help? Thanks in advance!

I've dealt with the same issue in my shop. What I've found helpful is to include the TPMS relearn in the tire rotation package for a flat fee, maybe around $10 more than just the rotation. This way, customers feel like they're getting a deal, and it simplifies the conversation. Additionally, I use shop management software that allows me to create a service package that includes both the rotation and the TPMS relearn, so it’s all clear upfront during the estimate. Make sure to explain to customers that the relearn is crucial for their safety and vehicle performance, and that helps justify the cost.

In my experience, I've always billed TPMS relearns separately, usually around $15-$25 depending on the complexity of the vehicle's system. I mention it during the initial conversation about the tire rotation so that there's no surprise later on. I also use a digital inspection system that allows me to document the tire rotation and the relearn, which helps customers understand the necessity of each step. If you can show them the benefits, they're usually more willing to pay for it.
