[computer repair] On-site computer repair — travel fee structure?

Tyler N.ScreenSavers PDX2 answers

As a computer repair shop owner, I've been considering incorporating on-site services into my offerings. I'm trying to figure out a fair travel fee structure that balances being profitable while still being attractive to customers. Currently, I charge a flat hourly rate for repairs in the shop, but I'm unsure how to approach pricing for travel. Should I charge a flat fee based on distance, or an hourly rate for the travel time? Any insight on how you structure these fees would be greatly appreciated!

I use a tiered travel fee system based on distance. For local jobs within 10 miles, I charge a $20 flat fee, but for anything beyond that, I increase it incrementally based on mileage. For instance, 10-20 miles is $40, and anything over 20 miles goes up to $60. This way, customers know upfront what they’re paying, and it helps cover my fuel and time. Additionally, I include a small note in my service agreement that explains these fees clearly to avoid any confusion.

I keep it simple with a flat rate for travel regardless of distance. My standard fee is $50, and I find that it works well for me. I also make sure to communicate this fee clearly during the booking process so customers aren't surprised. It's also a good idea to have a minimum service charge to ensure that the travel cost makes sense. I often use service management software to streamline booking and invoicing, which has helped me keep track of these details better.
