all-in-one PC repair keeps coming back — what am I missing?

Aisha P.TechRestore Austin2 answers

I've been dealing with a persistent issue on an all-in-one PC that's come into my shop multiple times now. The customer initially reported it crashing and freezing, so I replaced the RAM and did a clean install of the OS, thinking that would solve the problem. However, it came back just a week later with the same issues. I've run diagnostics, and everything seems to check out, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm missing something crucial. Has anyone else encountered this problem with all-in-ones? Any tips on what I should be looking for? It’s frustrating because the customer is getting anxious, and I want to provide a lasting solution. I’ve also checked for overheating, updated drivers, and even ran a full virus scan to rule out malware. If it’s a motherboard issue, I want to know before I suggest a costly repair. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're on the right track with the RAM and OS reinstall, but I would suggest checking the power supply next. All-in-ones can be a little tricky, and I've seen power supply issues masquerade as system crashes. If the voltages are dropping under load, it could cause the symptoms you're describing. I recommend using a multimeter to test the PSU, or if you prefer, you can pick up a replacement from a reliable vendor like Newegg or Amazon to rule it out. Also, while you're at it, ensure that all connections are solid and not just visually checked. Additionally, have you considered testing the hard drive? Sometimes, even if the drive passes initial tests, it can still have intermittent failures. Using software like CrystalDiskInfo can give you a clearer picture of its health. Good luck!

I had a similar case with an all-in-one last month. After replacing some components and doing a full diagnostic, I found that a software conflict with a third-party antivirus was causing the crashes. If you haven't already, check to see what software is running on it and if there are any conflicts. Sometimes, a simple software removal can save you a lot of time and effort. If the customer is using some heavy software, consider recommending lighter alternatives. Don't forget to back up data before making changes, just in case.
