office desktop repair keeps coming back — what am I missing?
Hey everyone, I’m having a frustrating issue with an office desktop that keeps coming back to my shop. It’s a Dell OptiPlex that originally came in for a slow boot time and random freezes. I replaced the HDD with a new SSD and upgraded the RAM, which seemed to help initially. However, a few weeks later, the client reports that it’s acting up again, this time with blue screens. I ran a full diagnostic using my shop's software, and nothing flagged as faulty. What am I missing?

Hi! It sounds like you’ve done a great job with the SSD and RAM upgrade, but I’d recommend checking the power supply next. Sometimes, older power supplies can’t handle the new components properly, especially with the added load from an SSD. I had a similar experience recently where replacing the PSU resolved ongoing issues that were misdiagnosed as software-related. If you can, test the voltage outputs first to see if they are stable. Also, consider running a memory test overnight to rule out intermittent RAM issues.
Hi there! If you haven’t already, make sure to check for overheating. Dust buildup on the CPU cooler or faulty thermal paste can cause instability under load. I’ve seen cases where a simple cleaning and repasting have saved the day. If all else fails, you might want to look into the motherboard for any signs of capacitors failing. Sometimes they can swell and lead to similar symptoms. Good luck!
