Hot air vs preheater for board work — what do you use?
As a repair shop owner, I've been grappling with whether to invest in a hot air station or a preheater for board work. I currently use a basic hot air rework station for most of my soldering and desoldering tasks. While it gets the job done, I find that I'm often struggling with uneven heating and the risk of blowing off nearby components. I’ve seen a few shops using preheaters, and they seem to have a smoother workflow, especially for larger boards. I’m curious about what you all use in your shops. Does anyone find that a preheater significantly improves the quality of their work? I'm particularly interested in how it affects workflow and if it's worth the investment. I’ve seen prices for preheaters ranging from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars, so I want to make sure it's a decision that pays off in the long run.

I've been using a preheater for about a year now, and I can’t recommend it enough. It really helps with even heating across the board, which reduces the risk of thermal shock to components. For me, it has improved the quality of my repairs significantly. I bought mine from a local supplier for around $600, and it has paid for itself in saved time and fewer mistakes. I suggest looking for a preheater that has adjustable temperature controls and a large enough surface to accommodate various board sizes. Plus, using it alongside my hot air station has sped up my workflow overall. If you can, try to demo a few models before purchasing. Some sellers will let you test them out, which can really help you make your decision.
