[laptop repair] Do you offer loaner laptops for multi-day jobs?

Elena M.FixIt Phone Lab2 answers

As a repair shop owner, I'm always looking for ways to improve customer satisfaction. With laptop repairs that can take several days, I'm considering offering loaner laptops to my clients. It seems like a great way to keep them engaged and satisfied while their device is being serviced. Have any of you implemented a loaner program? How do you manage it, and what challenges have you faced? I’m particularly interested in the logistics of tracking and maintaining the loaner laptops. Do you charge a fee for the loaners, or is it included in your repair pricing? Also, how do you handle the software and data on those devices? I want to ensure that the loaner laptops are secure and won’t compromise customer information. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I've been running a loaner laptop program for over a year now, and it has really boosted customer satisfaction. We charge a nominal fee, typically $10 a day, which covers our maintenance costs and helps deter potential misuse. The key is to have a solid tracking system in place — we use our shop management software to log each loaner out to customers and track their return dates. For software, we keep the loaners simple. Each laptop has a fresh install of the OS and only essential applications needed for basic tasks, like web browsing and document editing. We also ensure that all customer data is wiped clean before handing them over. This way, we maintain security and integrity while providing a seamless experience for our clients.

I haven’t implemented a loaner program yet, but I’ve thought about it. One challenge I see is the upfront cost of acquiring enough loaner devices, especially if repairs frequently run into multi-day situations. If you do decide to proceed, make sure to have a clear agreement with customers on the return condition of the loaners. You might want to consider using a checklist that customers sign when they take a laptop, which can help mitigate disputes later on regarding damage or missing accessories.
