Switch joy-con drift — repair or replace?

Devon C.BenchWorks Denver2 answers

I've been dealing with a lot of Nintendo Switch joy-con drift repairs lately, and I'm at a crossroads. On one hand, repairing the drift is often cheaper for the customer, but on the other hand, replacing the joy-con might be a more reliable long-term solution. I want to provide the best service possible, but I also have to consider my shop's profitability. I'm curious about how other shop owners approach this issue. Do you typically repair the joy-cons by replacing the joystick module, or do you recommend customers buy new ones? I've seen mixed feedback from customers, and it's hard to gauge if they prefer a repair or a replacement. Plus, I'd love any insights on sourcing parts and pricing that can help me make better decisions.

I completely understand your dilemma! In my shop, I generally recommend repairing the joy-cons unless the customer insists on a new pair. The joystick modules are relatively inexpensive if you source them from reliable vendors like iFixit or Digi-Key. I charge about $50 for the repair, which includes labor and parts. However, if the drift is severe or the joy-con is in bad condition, I let the customer know that a replacement might be worth considering. I've found that a lot of customers appreciate the transparency, and it builds trust. As for workflow, I usually have my technicians do a quick diagnostic before we proceed with any repair to ensure it's just the joystick at fault and not something else.

I've been in the same boat! I often replace the joy-cons rather than repair them, mainly because the time spent on repairs can sometimes take too long and not guarantee a lasting fix. New joy-cons can be pricey, but I usually keep an eye on sales from authorized distributors. I offer a trade-in discount for customers who bring in their old joy-cons, which helps offset the cost of new ones. For my workflow, I use a shop management software that tracks parts inventory, so I always know when to reorder parts and how to price my services competitively. Just remember to keep your customers informed about their options!
