Would you buy an existing repair shop vs start fresh?
I've been contemplating whether to buy an existing repair shop or start one from scratch. On one hand, buying a shop could give me an established customer base and existing workflows. However, starting fresh offers me the opportunity to create my own brand and set my own processes. I've noticed that existing shops sometimes come with hidden issues, like outdated equipment or bad supplier relationships that need fixing. What have your experiences been in this area? Would you recommend one option over the other?

I went through this dilemma myself a while back. Ultimately, I chose to buy an existing shop, and it was a game-changer. The key for me was the existing clientele; I didn't have to start from zero. Sure, there were some challenges like outdated equipment and a messy inventory system, but I used software like Shop-Ware to streamline my workflow. The transition took some work, but I think the customer base made it worth it. Just be sure to do your due diligence on the shop's finances and supplier relationships before you commit.
I started my shop from scratch and it was tough but rewarding. I got to build my brand the way I wanted and hand-pick my suppliers. However, I faced a steep learning curve when it came to marketing and attracting customers. If you choose this route, focus on establishing strong vendor relationships early on. I recommend checking out local suppliers for parts, as they usually provide better pricing and faster delivery compared to larger distributors. In the end, both options have their pros and cons, so it really depends on your risk tolerance and vision.
